My father, 83yrs old, has become very mean and nasty toward my mom. He’s always been Mr. Doom and gloom. I hate being around him. He told my mom she was not allowed to use the car to work or do volunteer work. She has a large inheritance and could leave any time. Is this a stage of something to come? Will he hurt her? I am a wreck. I am one of 5 and my mom only told my sister and I about this. Should I tell my siblings? Thanks for any help. I liked your blog. I wish my dad would die so my mom could live.

When I was a hospice bereavement coordinator for several years I witnessed many patients who had children that stopped visiting, based on the negative conversations that took place between them. My older patients would say, “My son never stays long enough.” Or “My daughter doesn’t want to eat with me.” I can only imagine what these folks were actually saying to their children, who were already struggling with anticipatory mourning on top of the negative comments made directly to them. You gave this daughter permission to speak to her mother as equals and the dialogue was authentic. All too often adult children simply do not confront their aging parents. They pull away rather than opening up about the way they feel. This can lead to guilt and shame about certain thoughts that they are having (i.e., wishing their parent dead). Mark, your article hits the mark. It should be read by adult children struggling with holding on and letting go, while learning ways to be effective communicators in the process.
