Usable Insight – Why the Right Wing hates the Left Wing

Read my lips. Two words will explain why… “Fearful aggression.”

Fearful aggression is well known to show dog and thoroughbred horse trainers. It occurs when such animals feel threatened and cornered and attack instead of running away. Animals are not the only living creatures to demonstrate it. Religious fanatics and Right Wing extremists possess it.

What is it that the Right Wing fears about the Left Wing? At any moment in time the Right Wing knows three things:

  • they don’t care about anyone but themselves
  • the Left Wing knows they don’t care about anyone but themselves
  • they know that the Left Wing knows that they don’t care about anyone but themselves

There is a saying that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. That would also imply that if you have something to hide, you do have something to fear. What the Right Wing is hiding is a nearly pure dedication to its own well being and prosperity at whatever cost to all others. And so it would seem that if they are aware that that modus operandi is operating, they might have lots to fear and thus to become aggressive about.

Here is what that might feel like.

Imagine you are walking down a street of poor, havenots and homeless people and that you not only see despair in their eyes, but desperation. You also see that they have nothing to lose and will do whatever they can to just survive. Now imagine that as you walk down that street you are wearing a $3000 Armani suit, a $10000 Rolex, and that they just saw you step out of $150,000 Mercedez Benz. Furthermore, imagine that they know you don’t care one bit about them, have no desire to help them, want even more than you already have (which is much more than you need or deserve) and have no compunction against going after that. Now imagine that you can’t run away from that scenario and there is no place to hide or safe haven to take you in.

What would you do?

You’d begin to feel panicky and then if you had no other alternative, you’d turn aggressive and fight to survive.

Their sense of greed and entitlement and lack of concern for others that everyone knows about is what causes Right Wing Republicans to be so afraid of the Left and of liberals. But of course 1% of 300,000 people gives them havens and ghettos for the rich in which to hide and make even more money to widen the gap even more between them and the havenots.

Why do Left Wing Democrats hate Right wing Republicans?
My guess is their sense of greed and entitlement and lack of concern for them.

Why do those who call themselves Left Wing Democrats do so little for those whom they say they represent? Nancy Pelosi is currently vacationing in Hawaii at a $10,000 a night resort.

Hate is usually met with hate. Here is a great article on hate – http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/let-their-words-do-the-talking/201103/the-seven-stage-hate-model-the-psychopathology-hate

Hate cripples people. How about a post on – “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

I bought “Just Listen,” just read it, and found some of your suggestions and tools for reaching people to be worthy of serious consideration and implementation. After reading above, however, it occurred to me that you might want to consider taking some of your own advice.

Who do you hope to reach beyond the “havens and ghettos” of the Left with your hateful generalization about the “Right Wing”? That’s an “insight”? Perhaps in the Hotel California but not very emotionally mature outside of the Left Coast.

On the dedication page of your book your wrote: “If you listen for hurt, fear, and pain or for people’s hopes and dreams, it is nearly always there. And when the other person feels you listening and feeling them, they will let down their guard and open their minds and hearts to you.” How about listening for the conservatives’ hopes and dreams for an America that isn’t $15 trillion in debt, where most Americans pay some federal income tax, where government is still limited and not trying to control or regualte a majority of our economy, and where the next generation of voters view your generation as producers rather than history’s greatest takers?

Good stuff from Steve above, btw.

As bad as the Dems are, they represent the only thing protecting us from a complete takeover by these financial elites. It is not an irrelevanc-e to note that todays Wall St. cash is flowing far more strongly to the Rs than the Ds. Those who hope to correct this destructio-n of our democracy by the big money interests need to focus on getting the Rs out of Congress. With a moderate Republican (Obama) and an old money country club Republican (Romney) as our only two choices, it is Congress that holds the keys to our future as a country, not the president, whoever he may be.

  8. Michiko Parrella Says:

Shockingly to me, Howard Dean said one of the most intelligen-t things I’ve ever heard him say last week on Morning Joe. He said that special interests are in the pockets of both Democrats and Republican-s. And, that in a capitalist society, failure has to be allowed. I totally agree on both points. (I wonder if he would agree to that last one with regard to the auto manufactur-ers?) The banks that were broken should have been able to file bankruptcy-. The auto manufactur-ers should have been allowed to do the same. Circumstan-ces would be much, much better if that had been allowed to happen. We have the fixes in place when businesses are about to go under, and there is a chapter in the bankruptcy code to fit those situations-. They should have been used.

    Mark:

I’m truly disappointed. Your site and work has in fact offered Usable Insight. You’ve become trusted because you’ve offered insight that comports with reality and you indicate that your desire is to help individuals. Then, I am assaulted by your post that “the right wing cares about no one but itself”. This is sad, not insightful. I could offer that many right wingers are just fine psychologically, financially and spiritually but are politically motivated not out of lust for power or greed but that they truly believe the system is broken. They truly believe that the system that has allowed them to succeed and live fulfilling lives is under assault. Perhaps most of them are sacrificially trying to ensure that the system that guarantees freedom survives so that those who follow after them can prosper as well.

I’m truly disappointed and sad for you that you’d begin 2012 with such a disgusting post. It is not Usable Insight, it’s sick invective.

  13. Dave J. Says:

Wow, Mark says right-wingers are defensive, and defensive comments come out. Yes, there are facts on your side, and the post may feel insulting. But I think he is coming from a bigger thought.

BTW, here is a guy who now lives in a tent city would get my vote over any of the current repub. candidates: http://bit.ly/s6lP13 His plan may sound nutty to a conservative, but the optimism is so refreshing. And his plan answers the same question from #12: “live fulfilling lives is under assault”
