Usable Insight – How to Go Viral
What do the following two video’s have in common?
- They both went viral
- They launched a career for each of these formerly unknown, very plain and even unattractive people (didn’t the audience, judges, you and I laugh at them at first?)
- Before you and I helped them go viral and before we (and the audience on the video) heard them sing, we were smug, saw ourselves as superior to them and saw them as foolish to think they could impress us. And then they hoisted all of us on our own petard of “nothing is possible” cynicism and slingshot us into the hidden, but still aching to believe “anything is possible” hopeful part of our personalities.
How did Susan Boyle and Paul Potts accomplish this? They “got into our listening” and heard our ache to believe underneath our skeptical reluctance and cynical refusal to give it a try.

This is a great post. I would think a related issue to explore would be how both Susan Boyle and Paul Potts got to a point in their lives where their confidence in their musical ability propelled them to go on Britain’s Got Talent with the thought that they have “nothing to lose”. They have to understand why you have said what you have said, whether it is something right or something wrong that they have done. On the third day, my older boy stopped talking to me. He told me he didnt like me because I barked to them on almost everything.
