Hi Dr. G! This a great and timely post. In my opinion, both from what I read and hear, many people in the general electorate vote for a political candidate based upon how that candidate makes them feel, versus objectively reviewing what the political candidate has done for the constituents they represent. I believe you're asking a lot from people to verify a candidate's record of achievements before voting for them since many, myself included, already have a predisposed bias for one political party/candidate or another. Our biases get in the way of moving the country forward politically on issues of importance.

Having said that, however, I still agree with your sentiment of how vital it is to get a brief overview of what a candidates' positions are on issues of importance to myself, and should be for other voters as well. By just listening to each another, despite our obvious biases and political beliefs, I think most sensible political candidates can forge a compromise on what we disagree on and move the country forward on the important issues that affect our country's future. An informed electorate will always be an enlightened one.

@ Matt: I agree with your ending statement that government officials are a reflection of the people who elect them.

I would encourage everyone to read The Path of Least Resistance by Robert Fritz. Do not assume the title implies the easy way out. Quite the contrary.

It is about creating successful outcomes. He is skeptical that politicians can adapt and apply his principles. Three main ideas:
    1) Be honest about current reality
    2) What do you want to create?
    3) Take the actions to move from #1 to #2 & repeat

His background as a composer is the foundation for his brilliance. His techniques are universal. In spite of his doubt that the political arena is success challenged, that does not impede us forcing the issue on the political process.

Unfortunately, we have allowed the major parties to wallow in a struggle for power, beholden to those who fund their campaigns and seldom answering to WE The People. Many of the social issues are insoluble without alienating the losers.

What we should be looking to do is create communities that thrive. You notice no mention of solving problems, which is usually a key attribute each and every politician brings to the party. Fritz has a great perspective on why problem solving is the wrong tactic.

Matter of fact, in our present system a problem solved for one constituency often means one created for another. Thus, oscillation occurs. The losers go to work trying to undo their problem.

The success techniques work for communities of all sizes, including the nation. Our current political system is failure based and ignores the power of making good choices. This single aspect would improve Healthcare and Education outcomes without one new tax, law, regulation, or lobbying initiative.

If you have a different perspective on the issues below you are welcome to it.
The link covers Healthcare, Energy, Education, and Economy

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I'm very glad to see such magnificent information being shared freely out there.

Mark,
Thanks again for more thought provoking topics. Linda makes an interesting point. The negative partisan tone has prevented us from making meaningful progress at a local, state and federal level for some time nowl People spend too much time often criticizing the person and not their policies. In doing so, does this promote compromise and cooperation or division and resistence?

Media and people (including myself) intentionally or not intentionally fail to give or understand the full context of our statements or facts. While it is true that he has passed only 2 laws, only 5% of the laws presented every year ever make it. He also co sponsored 950 bills during his tenure (this of course comes from articles via the internet) How much experience and effectiveness did President Obama have before he became President? How did this influence his ability to select his advisors? make decisions the last 4 years? and navigate through Washington's political mine field.

It may also be more effective to consider asking the questions above open ended without bias or in a leading manner so people could use to make their own choices and draw their own conclusions based on their own beliefs and experiences.

Teddy Roosevelt said it best, "The government is us; we are the government, you and I." What does this say about us collectively and as individuals? Do our elected officials ultimately serve as a refection of ourselves? Perhaps the real verification first starts within ourselves.

Linda, Good comment and if I had thought about about it beforehand I would have said what positive measurable results have either candidate gotten done for the 99 % and 1 %, because the 1 % also deserve to be represented.

Mark, it is completely obvious from your use of the "1 per cent" and "99 per cent", where you stand. This is really a nasty partisan tone that one would hope we are going to get away from. You could just as easily ask Obama if he has tithed all his life.
