Usable Insight – Leadership a la Bennis and Obama

A good leader makes you want to do a better job;
a great leader makes you want to be a better person.
The measure of a great leader is how many people
keep coming to visit years after working under them
to show them pictures of husbands, wives and children
and tell them what they’ve done with their lives.
- Warren Bennis

(and I bet Barack Obama and John Wooden would agree)

I would have added, “An awful leader makes you want to slit your wrists or at least quit” but I’m a tad less evolved than Warren.

According to Bennis: “As a manager, you don’t just manage: You also have to lead. And that means winning your people’s respect and accountability-not simply using your formal authority to force their obedience. Lead effectively, and you get top performance from your people, which burnishes your department’s or division’s bottom line.

But learning to lead isn’t easy. You have to master a whole new set of skills, including how to make the right judgment calls about people and strategy, and how to create a culture where people share the ideas and insights essential to your organization’s success.”

Sadly there is much more brightness (how to turn nothing into something) and smartness (how to turn something into everything) in this world than wisdom (knowing what is important and worth fighting for and what’s not).

If you want to bathe yourself in the wisdom of one of the wisest people you will ever listen to (and receive a special Usable Insight subscriber $50 discount off the regular fee of $349), you and your teams should attend the live webinar: Move from Managing to Leading (click link to register) with Warren Bennis, the foremost authority on leadership in the world, who will be interviewed by Dr. Mark Goulston on December 11 from 11:00 AM -12:30 PM PST/1:00-2:30 PM CST/2:00-3:30 PM EST.
